The new University of the Arts London Campus for Central Saint Martins at King’s Cross has won the World Architecture News Education Award 2012. Stanton Williams were praised by the judges for their sensitive intervention on a complex site with many contextual and programmatic challenges, “a fascinating response to what one can only imagine was a staggeringly complex brief.”
“A skilful combination of urbanism and campus planning in the heart of London... great urban design combined with a rich educational environment”. The jury enthused about the way in which the project responded and interacted with its historical context while admirably meeting criteria for the college’s functional requirements. “It provides a capacity for the education environment to develop and advance. It has only just opened but I think it will stand the test of time.”
The judges also shortlisted the project for the World Architecture News ECO Award for its ‘great example of sustainable architecture’. Each shortlisted scheme has has demonstrated outstanding eco credentials. The winners will be announced later in the year.
