Britten-Pears Archive building opens

Stanton Williams’ new archive building for the Britten-Pears Foundation has been officially opened by Dame Janet Baker. The first major purpose built archive in the UK, it houses the extensive collection of music manuscripts, letters, photographs and recordings of the composer Benjamin Britten and tenor Peter Pears. The red brick building complements the site of The Red House in Aldeburgh, the Grade II listed former home of Britten, and has been completed in time for Britten’s Centenary celebrations.

With a design that roots the building firmly in its context, the Britten-Pears archive provides optimum environmental conditions for the preservation of its significant collection through pioneering low-energy means, achieving a passive archive environment.
