The Zayed Centre for Research into Rare Diseases in Children has won the Health and Wellbeing prize at the 2021 AJ Architecture Awards.
As reported by the AJ, 'Care’ – according to the judges – is the word that best sums up the Zayed Centre for Research, whose ‘finishes, details, acoustics, and clinical aspects, have all been done with a great deal of care.’
The result is a non-clinical architectural environment, where a sense of openness and generosity dissolves the ‘clinical experience’, creating a calm and dignified environment for young patients and their families as they address their health issues. The public-facing research facility also aims to celebrate and demystify the often-invisible work of researchers and clinicians. Placing science on show, a transparent ground floor gives prominence to the activities inside the laboratories, visible from all sides within the Centre as well as from the street outside.
