LFA 2017: Transformation and Continuity
Tom Dyckhoff in conversation with Stanton Williams
To mark the opening of the Musée d’arts de Nantes in France, and a year since being appointed to design the new Museum of London in West Smithfield, Stanton Williams will host a talk discussing the relationship between memory and architecture.
Using these two projects as case studies, Stanton Williams directors Paul Williams and Patrick Richard, with architectural historian, writer and broadcaster Tom Dyckhoff, will explore how the layered history of a site and its context can influence not only new architecture but also our feeling of a sense of place. They will question how architects can bring memories from the past through new design, and in particular when working with existing architecture, how architects can create contemporary transformations while being sensitive to a building’s historic value.
