The Musée d’arts, which was established in 1801 and has been housed in the current building since 1900, has been a major cultural institution in Nantes since the beginning. The institution thus deserved a new lease of life worthy of its importance, and its heritage status was a fundamental parameter in the renovation project. In 2009, Stanton Williams won an international competition for the transformation and extension of the Musée d’arts in Nantes and the design for the interior of the buildings that make up the new museum.
The book describes the architectural journey of the building through archival imagery, photography, illustrations and interviews with Stanton Williams’ Director Patrick Richard, the Mayor of Nantes Johanna Rolland, the Director of the museum Sophie Levy and consultants Max Fordham and Artelia.
